In case you didn’t know…
United, who have undergone a resurrection of sorts under Solskjaer, are set to host their Merseyside rivals at Old Trafford later tonight.
The last time the two rivals met, a merciless Liverpool demolished Jose Mourinho’s unhappy United side 3-1 at Anfield.
The game will prove to be important for both sides as Liverpool look to overtake Manchester City at the top of the Premier League table while United will hope to extend their one-point lead over Arsenal in their race for a Champions League spot.
Liverpool are hoping to win their first title in 29 years after the team improved remarkably under Klopp. The former Borussia Dortmund manager even took the side to the Champions League final last year but failed to overcome Zinedine Zidane’s mighty Real Madrid.
Of course, only a loss can stop Klopp’s side from surpassing City as the two title-contenders are level on points.
The heart of the matter
Ahead of the much-awaited clash, Solskjaer has taunted Liverpool stating that fans of the club seem to think that every year is the year they will win the title.
According to Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer said, “I have loads of Liverpool fans back home and it has been like every year is going to be their year. It has got to October and it’s ‘OK, next year’.”
“Now they are in the race so now for them it is going to be an exciting finish to the league now they are in it.”
“That is none of our concern. We just have to concentrate on ourselves.”
The United boss went on to talk about the difficulties of winning the English top flight, but hopes that his side will get back to the top of the league and not settle for a mere top-four finish.
“It is difficult to win the league here. It is probably the toughest league to win and when you look at it there are only five or six teams that have won the Premier League. Leicester did it - which was a miracle - before that Blackburn did it, but then there was a few big clubs that have won it.”
“Of course they do feel that pressure. I think the supporters and players feel it, but, then again, we have not won it for a few years and so we want to get back to it. We need to make sure that we don’t end up just being happy to be among the top four.
What’s next?
United welcome Liverpool to Old Trafford later tonight in what promises to be an absolute blockbuster. They will then travel to Crystal Palace, while Liverpool play host to Watford in the next round of fixtures.
